South Carolina State Museum

The largest museum in the Southeastern United States, the South Carolina State Museum is an amazing collection of exhibitions of art, natural history, culture, science and technology. Housed in the historic Columbia Mills Building on the Congaree River, this museum honors South Carolina's culture, history and lifestyle with hundreds of permanent and rotating exhibits including the first American-built locomotive and a recreation of a Megalodon dinosaur.


Hours -

Tuesday to Saturday 10AM-5PM, Sunday 1PM-5PM

Prices -

$7 adults, $6 seniors (62 & over), $5 children (ages 2-13), free infants (2 & under)

Exhibits for Children and Adults

Adults, teens and young children will enjoy the exhibits at the museum. Children will in particular enjoy the dinosaur exhibit, giant shark display and Civil War submarine.

  • Is there anywhere to eat inside the museum?

    Yes, on the second floor mezzanine you will find the Crescent Café, which serves a lunch menu of sandwiches, soups, salads, pastries, cookies and fresh fudge (made on site).
  • Are tours available?

    Yes, museum tours are available every Saturday for 60 minutes beginning at 11AM and 1PM. Tours are free with museum admission and no reservations are required.
