University of South Carolina

Home to more than 200 years of history and tradition, the University of South Carolina in Columbia began in a single building in 1805 at what is now known as the Horseshoe. A distinguished public research university, USC is set on a historic campus that covers 359 acres in downtown Columbia. An innovative and award-winning school, USC also boasts the largest collection of literature by Robert Burns outside of Scotland and by Hemingway in the entire world.

The Horseshoe

USC began as a single-building school in 1805 at the space now known as the Horseshoe, the heart of the campus. Now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Horseshow is a beautiful green space surrounded by federal-style architecture, a perfect meeting place for college students and their families.

Visitor Center

Start your visit to USC at the Visitor Center, located in McKissick at the head of the historic Horseshoe. It’s open Monday to Friday from 8:30AM-5PM and on Saturdays from 11AM-3PM.

    and holidays.
  • What is the best place to park for visitors?

    Visitor parking is available through the intersection of Pendleton and Bull Streets, past the cul-de-sac behind the Palmetto tree. Speak with the courtesy officer for parking information.
